The plant produces a spike-shaped inflorescence, with a cluster of brown seed capsules positioned high on each stem. Its fruit is an achene. This species grows in wetland habitats, including woodland swales, floodplains, marshes, water meadows, ditches, and areas surrounding streams and ponds.
