Carex sterilis Willd. is a perennial, rhizomatous, tuft-forming plant that grows up to 30 inches tall. Its leaves are alternate, flat, smooth, and up to 10 inches long, with tightly wrapped sheaths. Basal stems bear brownish sheaths. The inflorescence is made up of multiple spikes, with male and female spikes growing on separate individual plants. The fruit of this species is an achene, which develops from June to July. This species favors wetland habitats, particularly calcareous fens, marshes, meadows, and areas around lakes and rivers.
