About Carex sparganioides Muhl. ex Willd.

Carex sparganioides, commonly called bur-reed sedge or loose-headed bracted sedge, is a perennial species of plant in the sedge family, Cyperaceae. Its native range covers most of the eastern and central United States, as well as eastern Canada. In Maine, this species is most often found growing in hardwood or mixed forests. It typically reaches a height of 30 to 100 centimeters, which is 12 to 39 inches. Its egg-shaped spikelets contain teardrop-shaped seed sacs. Carex sparganioides is classified as endangered in Maine and New Hampshire. It is used for soil stabilization on shaded slopes.
