About Carex physodes M.Bieb.
Carex physodes M.Bieb. (C. physodes) is a species of sedge that grows 20 to 25 cm tall. Its stems are erect, with pale brown sheaths covering the base. Leaves are shorter than the stem; their blades are greenish, linear, slightly curved, and have scabrous margins. The inflorescence is dense, and shaped oblong-ovate or subglobose. Female glumes are brown and broadly ovate-lanceolate. Utricles are yellowish, and both much longer and broader than the glumes. When young, utricles are ovate; at maturity, they become strongly inflated, shaped globose or elliptic, and measure 1–1.5 × 0.5–1 cm. Utricles are membranous, with yellowish orange or brownish veins, a rounded base, and an apex that contracts into a short beak. This species flowers and produces fruits between April and May. It is adapted to grow in sandy desert or cold desert environments.
