About Carex obnupta L.H.Bailey
This species of sedge, scientifically named Carex obnupta L.H.Bailey, produces upright, angled stems that reach a maximum height of around 1.2 meters. It grows in dense beds or colonies from interconnected rhizome networks. Its inflorescence is a cluster of flower spikes, accompanied by a long, leaflike bract. Pistillate spikes, and sometimes also staminate spikes, hang from peduncles. The fruit of this plant is covered by a hard, tough, shiny perigynium that is typically dark in color. Carex obnupta is native to western North America, ranging from British Columbia in the north to California in the south. It grows abundantly in wet, often saline habitats such as wetlands.
