About Carex nigricans C.A.Mey.
This plant species, Carex nigricans C.A.Mey., grows from a network of short rhizomes. It forms thick mats and loose clumps of stems, reaching up to 30 centimeters in height. Its pistillate flowers bear dark bracts, and its fruit is enclosed within a dark-colored perigynium with a long beak. This sedge is native to western North America. Its native range extends from Alaska south to the Sierra Nevada in California, and east to Colorado. It grows in wet sites within mountain, taiga, and tundra habitats.
