Carex nigra (L.) Reichard is an evergreen, perennial tussock-forming sedge that grows up to 70 centimeters tall. Its leaves are bluish-green. This species produces purplish-black flower spikes and seed heads that emerge from early to late summer. It is native to wetlands across Europe, western Asia, north Africa, and eastern North America. The eastern edge of its native range extends to central Siberia, Turkey, and the Caucasus. It grows best in marshes, wetlands, and alkaline fens.
