About Carex muehlenbergii Willd.
Carex muehlenbergii Willd. is a perennial monocot that grows 20 to 90 centimeters tall. Plants of this species form tufts of foliage that grow from a short, dark, woody rhizome. Its inflorescence holds 3 to 10 flower spikes, and can be green, yellow, or brown in color. Carex muehlenbergii inhabits dry sandy fields, dunes, banks, the edges of oak and aspen forests, dry woods, and sand prairies. It is classified as a threatened species in the U.S. states of Maine and Vermont. Two varieties of this species are recognized in North America. Carex muehlenbergii var. enervis Boott differs from the other variety in having smaller carpellate scales and smaller perigynia, and it also lacks veins on the adaxial side of the perigynium. The second recognized variety is Carex muehlenbergii var. muehlenbergii.
