About Carex mertensii J.D.Prescott ex Bong.

Carex mertensii J.D.Prescott ex Bong. is a species of sedge with the common name Mertens' sedge. It is native to western North America, ranging from Alaska through California to Montana. In this region, it grows in moist and wet habitat found in mountain forests and meadows. This sedge grows in clumps of stems that reach a maximum height between 80 and 120 centimeters. Its leaves are small, and leaves growing toward the base of the stems are reduced to nothing but sheaths. The inflorescence is a densely packed, bullet-shaped cluster of overlapping flowers, that mostly hangs from long peduncles. Each inflorescence is generally 2 to 4 centimeters long. Every individual flower in the cluster has a dark-colored bract.
