About Carex magellanica Lam.
Carex magellanica Lam. is a perennial sedge that grows in loose tufts from a short to long rhizome. Its culms can grow taller than 55 cm (22 in), and are leafy along their lower section. The leaves of this species are shorter than the culms, and measure 2–4 mm (0.079–0.157 in) wide. This leaf width distinguishes it from the similar species Carex limosa, commonly called muck sedge, which has leaves wider than 4 mm (0.16 in). This sedge produces one terminal spikelet that contains only stamens, plus one to four additional ovoid spikelets that are pistillate. These pistillate spikelets are borne on drooping, slender peduncles. In terms of distribution and habitat, Carex magellanica prefers growing in wet ground, marshes, waterways, and Sphagnum bogs.
