The scientific name of this species is Carex luzulina Olney. Carex luzulina forms loose to dense clumps of rhizomatous stems that reach a maximum height of around 90 centimeters. Its inflorescence consists of a small number of flower spikes that bear dark-colored scales. The fruit of this plant is covered by a sac-like structure called a perigynium, which is typically greenish with some dark purple coloring. This sedge is native to western North America, ranging from British Columbia south to California and east to Wyoming. It grows in wet habitats, including bogs and mountain meadows.
