Carex lurida Wahlenb. is a clump-forming species of sedge. It grows in a tuft of basal leaves, with upright culms that reach a maximum height of 90 cm. Its leaves are bright yellow-green, and grow to approximately half the length of the plant’s stems. The inflorescence is made up of large, brush-shaped spikes that are lime green when young, and turn golden brown as they ripen. This species has a rhizomatous root system, with additional fibrous roots. Carex lurida is a wetland plant that favors marshy growing conditions, including sedge meadows, swamps, and roadside ditches. It is native to the range extending from Eastern Canada south to Ecuador, and has been introduced to New Zealand.
