About Carex hystericina Muhl. ex Willd.
This sedge species, Carex hystericina Muhl. ex Willd., grows dense or loose clumps of triangular stems that reach up to 1 meter in height, growing from short rhizomes. Its leaves are green, growing both basally and alternately, and sometimes grow taller than the stems. Basal leaves have a fibrous texture and purplish color. The inflorescence is several centimeters long, and is accompanied by a bract that is longer than the plant's spikes. Separate male (staminate) and female (pistillate) spikes grow on the same individual plant. Its fruits are covered by perigynia that have pointed, toothed tips. Carex hystericina grows in wet habitats including wetlands and riverbanks, and is particularly found growing on calcareous soils.
