About Carex fracta Mack.
Carex fracta, formally described by Mackenzie, is a species of sedge that goes by the common name fragile sheath sedge. It is native to the western United States, occurring in the region from Washington down to California. Within this range, it grows in areas that range from moist to dry, specifically in mountain forests and mountain meadows. This sedge grows in dense clumps of stems, which can sometimes grow to be over one meter tall. Its leaves connect to the stem via a distinct thin, membranous sheath, a characteristic trait of the species. The plant's inflorescence is a cluster of spikes that may be dense or loose, with spikes colored from light green to gold. A small number of spikes also grow lower down on the stem. The flowers of Carex fracta are covered in light-colored scales.
