About Carex firma Host

The scientific name of this species is Carex firma Host. Carex firma grows as thick cushions. Its leaves are dark green and stiff. Under normal growing conditions, leaves reach up to 8 centimetres (3.1 inches) long; in moist, sheltered locations, they can grow up to 10 centimetres (4 inches) long. Stems grow up to 20 centimetres (7.9 inches) tall, and may reach an exceptional maximum height of 30 centimetres (12 inches), but stems are always at least twice as long as the leaves. In synecology, Carex firma is a characteristic component of Caricetum firmae, which is also called Firmetum. This community is an important alpine zone plant community that grows over calcareous rock. Carex firma is able to survive temperatures as low as −50 °C (−58 °F).
