About Carex elata All.
Carex elata All. is an evergreen perennial sedge that grows in tussock form. It reaches 1.2 meters (4 feet) tall and spreads 1.5 meters (5 feet) wide. Its foliage is bright gold with green margins. This species flowers from May to June, and its seeds ripen from July to August. It is monoecious, meaning individual flowers are either male or female, but both types of flower occur on the same plant. The cultivar 'Aurea' of this species has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
In its habitat, Carex elata grows best in nutrient-rich wetland conditions, including marshes, fens, wet woods, and the margins of shallow water.
