About Carex digitalis Willd.
This sedge species has a densely turfy growth habit, with many shoots growing from a single root system to form a thick mat. Its culms grow either erect or ascending, reaching lengths of 7 to 52 cm (2.8 to 20.5 in) and widths of 0.5 to 1 mm (0.020 to 0.039 in). Leaves are enclosed by basal sheaths that are white or light brown; the higher sheaths on the plant are green. Leaf blades measure 8 to 44 cm (3.1 to 17.3 in) in length and 0.8 to 5 mm (0.031 to 0.197 in) in width.
This species grows in temperate areas. In Canada, its distribution includes Ontario, extending north into parts of Quebec and east to Nova Scotia. Its range continues south through the United States, reaching Texas and Oklahoma in the southeast and Florida in the southwest.
