About Carex brunnescens (Pers.) Poir.
Carex brunnescens, commonly known as brownish sedge or green bog sedge, is a plant species that belongs to the sedge family Cyperaceae. It has a circumboreal distribution, and is native to both North America and Eurasia. In the United States, it occurs mainly in the Northeast and Midwest, extending south into the Appalachian Mountains, with isolated disjunct populations located further west in the Rocky Mountains. This species occupies a wide variety of natural habitats, including forests, bogs, fens, and rock outcrops. Carex brunnescens shows notable morphological variation across its large geographic range. Its form differs depending on whether it grows in shaded or sunny locations. Specimens growing in shade tend to be slender with weak stems and green scales, while specimens growing in full sun tend to be stiffly erect with brown scales. Additional taxonomic study is needed to clarify the extent of variation within this species.
