About Carex brunnea Thunb.

Carex brunnea, commonly known as the greater brown sedge, is a small flowering plant species. It occurs across many parts of Asia, as well as eastern Australia and Lord Howe Island. It is most often found in disturbed, sunny locations within or adjacent to rainforest. This species was one of many plants described by Robert Brown, and its description was published in his 1810 work Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van Diemen. Brown recorded the plant's type as "(J.) v.v." Robert Brown's published name Carex gracilis for this species was later ruled invalid, because the plant had already been documented in scientific literature in 1784. That 1784 publication was authored by Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg, and appeared in the 14th edition of Murray's Systema Vegetabilium, giving the species its current accepted scientific name Carex brunnea Thunb.
