Carex amplifolia Boott is a rhizomatous sedge. It produces stems that grow 50 to 100 centimeters tall. The stems are winged, have reddish-tinted bases, and are wrapped in long, roughly hairy leaves that reach up to 2 centimeters wide. Its inflorescence consists of 5 to 8 cylindrical spikes; each spike can grow up to 10 to 14 centimeters long, and often holds hundreds of individual flowers.
