About Carex albicans Willd. ex Spreng.
Carex albicans, commonly known as whitetinge sedge, is a species of flowering plant in the sedge family, Cyperaceae. It is native to eastern North America, occurring in both Canada and the United States. Its typical natural habitat is dry forests and woodlands. Carex albicans is a perennial graminoid. It produces fruit in early spring, and its fruits are partially dispersed by ants. Carex section Acrocystis is recognized as taxonomically difficult, with new species still being described in eastern North America. Two species from this section, Carex emmonsii and Carex physorhyncha, were historically treated as varieties of Carex albicans, due to strong morphological and biochemical similarities shared by the three taxa. However, modern botanical treatments from the 2010s often classify these three as separate species.
