About Carabus scabrosus Olivier, 1790
Carabus scabrosus Olivier, 1790 is a species of Carabus beetle. Adults reach approximately 50 millimetres (2.0 in) in length, and about 30 millimetres (1.2 in) in width at the broadest part of the elytra. This species counts among the largest known Carabus beetles. Its basic body colour varies from bluish-black to violet or dark reddish brown. Black varieties of this beetle typically have a high absorption rate in the near-infrared part of the light spectrum. The thorax is broad, truncated at both the anterior and posterior ends, and only very slightly convex. The elytra are oval, convex, and covered entirely with small tubercles. The pronotum has a rugose, granular surface.
