About Camponotus dumetorum Wheeler, 1910

Camponotus dumetorum Wheeler, 1910 is a species of carpenter ant native to North America. It is related to other species from the subgenus Tanaemyrmex found in western North America, including C. semitestaceus and C. vicinus. C. dumetorum workers are primarily nocturnal, and the species forms underground nests. Like other ant species native to California, C. dumetorum populations have been displaced by the introduced invasive Argentine ant. The species has been recorded in Baja California and California, with its distribution concentrated in the California floristic province. The presence of non-native L. humile (the Argentine ant) has displaced C. dumetorum, and this displacement has compromised the species' mutualistic relationships with other native organisms.
