About Campanula vidalii H.C.Watson

This species, previously classified under the genus Azorina as Azorina vidalii, is a small perennial shrub. It typically grows to around 30 cm (12 in) tall, but can reach heights of up to 2 m (6 ft 7 in). Its branches are glabrous, hairless. The leaves are 3โ€“9 cm (1.2โ€“3.5 in) long and 3โ€“9 mm (0.12โ€“0.35 in) wide, glabrous, hairless, and colored dark green or reddish-green. The bell-shaped flowers are white or pale pinkish, reaching up to 3 cm (1.2 in) in length. After flowering, it produces a capsule that contains numerous seeds. Campanula vidalii is native to all nine islands of the Azores. It grows alongside other species that tolerate sea breeze, primarily in the crevices of coastal cliffs. It can also grow on steep slopes with sandy deposits, and always occurs in heavily exposed habitats. It can also be found in manmade replacement habitats such as roofs and walls. This species is planted as an ornamental plant on its native Azorean islands and in other parts of the world. Its leaves are edible and can be consumed raw.
