About Campanula carpatica Jacq.
Campanula carpatica Jacq. is a low-growing herbaceous perennial. This species has basal leaves and thin, white rhizomes, and its stems can grow up to 45 cm long. It produces solitary purple flowers held on stalks 10 to 15 cm long, and its blooming period runs from June to August.
Campanula carpatica is native to several areas of Europe: the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Poland, Western Russia, and the Carpathian Mountains of Central Europe. It has been introduced beyond its native range, to other European locations including Hungary, Denmark, Belgium, France, Norway, and the United Kingdom. It has also been introduced to North America, where it has been recorded growing in the U.S. states of Connecticut and Michigan.
In the wild, Campanula carpatica grows in elevated mountainous habitats, growing among rocks. It was first brought to the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew in 1774 by Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin. Multiple cultivars in shades of white, blue, pink, and purple have been developed for ornamental garden use, and the species has earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
