About Calochortus amoenus Greene
Calochortus amoenus is a perennial herb that forms a branching stem reaching heights between 20 and 50 centimeters. A single narrow leaf grows at the base of the stem; it can reach up to 50 centimeters in length and does not wither away when the plant flowers. Two to three smaller leaves develop along the stem. The inflorescence holds two or more nodding flowers, each with petals curved closed to form a spherical shape. All sepals and petals are rose-colored; the petals are fringed and lined with long, pink whiskery hairs. After flowering, the plant produces a winged capsule fruit 2 to 3 centimeters long, which holds dark brown seeds. This species is endemic to California, where it grows specifically in the Central Sierra Nevada foothills. It occurs on grassy slopes in partial shade, within California oak woodland and Yellow Pine Forest habitats, at elevations between 500 and 1,500 meters (1,600 to 4,900 feet).
