About Callophrys polios (Cook & Watson, 1907)

Callophrys polios, commonly known as the hoary elfin, is a butterfly species that belongs to the family Lycaenidae. In the U.S. state of Connecticut, this species is listed as a species of special concern, and it is believed to be extirpated from this region. The wingspan of adult hoary elfins ranges from 22 to 29 mm. Adults have one generation per year, and they are active on the wing between April and June. The larvae of Callophrys polios feed primarily on Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, and may also feed on Epigaea repens. Adult hoary elfins feed on flower nectar from a variety of plant species, including leatherleaf, pyxie, wild strawberry, and willow. This species hibernates in the chrysalid stage.
