About Calliptamus siciliae Ramme, 1927
Calliptamus siciliae exhibits sexual dimorphism in body length: males measure 12โ17 millimetres (0.47โ0.67 in), while females reach 19โ27 millimetres (0.75โ1.06 in). The basic body coloration is quite variable, ranging from dark gray and greyish brown to reddish brown. The forewings are narrow and marked with dark spots. The hind wings are transparent and milky in appearance. The tibiae of the hindlegs and the underside of the femurs are reddish. This species can be distinguished from similar species by its front wings (tegmina), which are shorter than the abdomen. This endemic species is only found in southeastern France, Switzerland, mainland Italy, and Sicily; its specific epithet siciliae references this last locality. It inhabits dry meadows, shrubland, arid environments, and mountainous areas along stony paths, occurring at elevations of 220โ1,420 metres (720โ4,660 ft) above sea level. It prefers dense vegetation.
