About Calliandra surinamensis Benth.
Calliandra surinamensis Benth. is a low-branching evergreen tropical shrub named after Suriname, a country in northern South America. This species typically grows with multiple complexly branched trunks, reaching an approximate height of 5 meters, though many sources note it only grows to 3 meters. When left unpruned, it produces long, thin branches that eventually droop down to the ground. Its leaves close and droop from dusk until morning, when they reopen again. It has been reported to contain lectins that are toxic to cancer cells, but additional research on this is needed. It contains three notable compounds: myrectin, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; lupeol, which has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties; and ferulic acid, which has antimicrobial properties. Year-round production of nectar and pollen attracts wildlife including lorikeets and fruit bats to this shrub.
