Common Name and Traditional Use
The Aztecs named this plant Tlacoxiloxochitl and used it to treat coughs.
Cough Remedy Preparation
According to An Aztec Herbal, the remedy for a troublesome cough is to sip boiled liquor made from the plant's skinned, ground root mixed in water; a portion of this mixture with honey is also used to anoint the throat.
Remedy for Blood in Sputum
If the person also spits blood, they should drink the same liquor before meals.
Additional Root Use
Chewing the described root with honey is also said to help.
Alternate Cough Herb
The root of another herb called tzopelica-cococ, ground in tepid water, is also noted as valuable for people with a cough, who can either drink its liquor or chew the root.
