About Calliandra houstoniana (Mill.) Standl.

Calliandra houstoniana is a species of flowering plant in the genus Calliandra, belonging to the family Fabaceae. The Aztecs named this plant Tlacoxiloxochitl and used it to treat coughs. According to An Aztec Herbal, the remedy for a troublesome cough is to sip boiled liquor made from the plant's skinned, ground root mixed in water; a portion of this mixture with honey is also used to anoint the throat. If the person also spits blood, they should drink the same liquor before meals. Chewing the described root with honey is also said to help. The root of another herb called tzopelica-cococ, ground in tepid water, is also noted as valuable for people with a cough, who can either drink its liquor or chew the root.
