About Caligo idomeneus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Caligo idomeneus, commonly known as the Idomeneus giant owl, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae. This species is found in the Amazon rainforest and eastern Andes, with a range extending from Venezuela to Ecuador, and further south to Mato Grosso in southern Brazil. The species is named after Idomeneus, who led the Cretan army during the Trojan War. The wingspan of adult Caligo idomeneus measures approximately 110–140 millimetres, equal to 4.3–5.5 inches. The larvae of this butterfly feed on plants from the Musa genus.
