About Caligo brasiliensis (Felder, 1862)

Caligo brasiliensis, commonly known as the Brazilian owl, sulanus owl, or almond-eyed owl, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae. This species is distributed across most of South America in the form of multiple distinct subspecies, with recorded populations in Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. Its range extends northward through Trinidad, Honduras, Guatemala, and Panama to reach Mexico. Larvae of the nominate subspecies of Caligo brasiliensis have been documented feeding on Euterpe edulis, species in the genus Musa, and Hedychium coronarium. Larvae of the subspecies Caligo brasiliensis sulanus have been recorded feeding on Heliconia, Calathea, and Musa species.
