About Caleana nigrita Lindl.
Caleana nigrita Lindl. produces a single smooth leaf that can be green or red, measuring 10 to 30 millimeters (0.4 to 1 inch) long and 7 to 11 millimeters (0.3 to 0.4 inch) wide. One or two greenish-yellow and red flowers, 16–27 millimeters (0.6–1 inch) long and 9–16 millimeters (0.4–0.6 inch) wide, grow on a stalk that stands 50–150 millimeters (2–6 inches) high. The dorsal sepal, lateral sepals, and petals all hang downward. The dorsal sepal is pressed against the column, which has broad wings, and together these structures form a bucket-like shape. Two-thirds of the outer section of the labellum is covered in glossy black glands, also called calli, and there is a small hump at the center of the labellum. This species flowers from August to October. Caleana nigrita occurs in near-coastal areas between Eneabba and Esperance, within the Swan Coastal Plain, Warren, Avon Wheatbelt, Esperance Plains, Jarrah Forest and Mallee biogeographic regions. It most commonly grows in woodland and shrubland habitats.
