About Calathus melanocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Calathus melanocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a species of ground beetle belonging to the Platyninae subfamily. Individuals of this species are mostly black, with a red thorax, and have an overall blackish-red colouration. Its flight period runs from April to September. This beetle lives on bare, sandy soil, under stones, and in leaf litter. It can be found throughout most of Europe, with the exceptions of Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, and various European, Asian, and African islands. It also occurs widely across the United Kingdom.
