About Caladenia ampla (D.L.Jones) G.N.Backh.
Caladenia ampla (D.L.Jones) G.N.Backh. is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous herb that grows from an underground tuber. It produces a single hairy leaf, which measures 6โ10 cm (2โ4 in) long and 5โ7 mm (0.2โ0.3 in) wide. One (rarely two) flowers are borne on a flowering spike that reaches up to 22 cm (9 in) in height. The dorsal sepal is erect and oblong to lance-shaped, 30โ37 mm (1.2โ1.5 in) long and about 3 mm (0.1 in) wide. It tapers toward its end, which terminates in a 6.5โ9 mm (0.3โ0.4 in) long glandular structure. The lateral sepals are also oblong to lance-shaped, measuring 30โ37 mm (1.2โ1.5 in) long and 4โ5 mm (0.16โ0.20 in) wide, and end in a gland matching the one on the dorsal sepal. The petals are 28โ32 mm (1.1โ1.3 in) long, 2โ3 mm (0.08โ0.1 in) wide, and taper to a point. The labellum is broadly egg-shaped and curves forward; when flattened, it is 14โ16 mm (0.55โ0.63 in) long and 10โ12 mm (0.4โ0.5 in) wide. The labellum is cream-coloured with red veins and a dark red tip, and is sometimes entirely red. There are 9 to 12 pairs of calli along the edge of the labellum, which decrease in length toward the front of the structure. Four rows of foot-shaped calli are present in the centre of the labellum, and these also grow smaller toward the tip. Flowering occurs in September and October. This species is only known from the goldfields region of Victoria, where it grows in mallee scrub and woodlands.
