About Cakile arctica Pobed.

Cakile arctica Pobed., commonly known as sea rocket and Fjörukál, is a flowering plant species belonging to the family Brassicaceae. Its native range covers the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway (it is classified as extinct in Svalbard), and North European Russia following the WGSRPD regional definition. This is an annual species, meaning it completes its full life cycle of germination, growth, flowering, seed production, and death within a single year. Cakile arctica acts as a pioneer species in primary succession. It was the first vascular plant recorded colonising Surtsey, a volcanic island located 32 km (20 mi) south of Iceland that formed through volcanic eruptions between 1963 and 1967. It was first observed growing on Surtsey in 1965. Even though it was the first vascular plant to grow on the island, it had not successfully established a persistent population there as of 1987.
