The hooded mountain tanager, with the scientific name Buthraupis montana, is a bird species that belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only species classified in the genus Buthraupis. This species occurs in forests and woodlands in the Andean highlands of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, growing at altitudes ranging from 1,800 to 3,000 m, or 5,900 to 9,800 ft. Measuring 23 centimetres (9.1 in) in length and weighing 96 grams (3.4 oz), the hooded mountain tanager ranks among the largest tanager species. It has distinct coloration: a black head and black thighs, a blue back, a bright yellow belly, and red eyes.
