About Bulbine favosa (Thunb.) Schult. & Schult.f.
Bulbine favosa (Thunb.) Schult. & Schult.f. is a stemless plant that grows from a tuberous rhizome with spongy roots. Its leaves grow from the rhizome in a basal rosette; they are nearly cylindrical, measuring 9โ30 cm (3.5โ11.8 in) long by 1โ2 mm (0.039โ0.079 in) wide. Each individual plant produces 1 to 3 peduncles that are 5โ34 cm (2.0โ13.4 in) long and around 2.5 mm (0.098 in) wide. Each peduncle holds a sparse raceme that is 3โ18 cm (1.2โ7.1 in) long. This species has transparent white bracts that are narrowly egg-shaped with an elongated tip, measuring 3.5 mm (0.14 in) long and 2 mm (0.079 in) wide. Its pedicels can grow up to 13 mm (0.51 in) long. The flowers are yellow, and the fruit is an egg-shaped capsule, 3โ4 mm (0.12โ0.16 in) long and 2โ3 mm (0.079โ0.118 in) wide.
This species is native to South Africa, where it occurs in Eastern Cape Province, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North-West Province, and Western Cape Province, as well as to Zimbabwe. It grows in montane grasslands at elevations between 30โ2,000 m (98โ6,562 ft) above sea level, and prefers rocky habitats including rock crevices and stony soils.
