About Bubo cinerascens Guérin-Méneville, 1843
Bubo cinerascens (greyish eagle-owl) measures approximately 43 cm (17 inches) in length and weighs around 500 g (18 ounces). Like the related spotted eagle-owl, it has upperparts mottled in dark brown, buff, and white, with finely vermiculated (barred) underparts that create an overall greyish-brown appearance. It can be distinguished from the spotted eagle-owl by its dark brown eyes (instead of yellow), and a brownish facial disk marked with a thick brown circle surrounding each eye. It also has other morphological differences: it is lighter in body mass despite being similar in length, and has shorter tarsi. This species occurs in northern sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from Mauritania and Liberia eastward to Sudan and Somalia. Its known habitats include dry rocky deserts, open savannah, and lowland forests in Somalia.
