About Bromelia balansae Mez

Bromelia balansae Mez is a large terrestrial bromeliad that somewhat resembles the pineapple. Its green leaves grow 2–4 feet long and have very sharp spines. When the plant is ready to bloom, its center turns bright red, then white, before it produces an orange fruit. It gets its common name "heart of flame" from this flowering display. The orange fruit it produces is reported to be used to make a cooling drink. A book published in the previous century described this species as the most commonly cultivated bromelia. Due to its large size and rapid growth, it may be used for fencing. It grows best in full sun and is most suited for outdoor cultivation.
