About Brimeura amethystina (L.) Chouard
Brimeura amethystina, commonly known as the amethyst hyacinth, is a flowering plant in the asparagus family Asparagaceae. It is native to the Northern Pyrenees and northeast Spain. The 1830 record of this species from Kapela mountain, Croatia published by Reichenbach is likely a misidentification, referring instead to a Hyacinthella taxon native to the Balkan region. The amethyst hyacinth is a small bulbous herbaceous perennial that grows up to 20 cm (7.9 in) tall. It produces narrow grass-like leaves, and widely spaced bell-shaped flowers in shades of pale blue, dark blue, or violet that bloom in spring. There is also a white-flowered cultivar named 'Alba'. This species was formerly classified within the hyacinth genus Hyacinthus. Its Latin specific epithet amethystina translates to "violet coloured". When grown in cultivation in the United Kingdom, this plant has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
