About Brickellia nevinii A.Gray
Brickellia nevinii A.Gray is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family, with the common name Nevin's brickellbush. This species is endemic to southern California, where it is an uncommon member of desert and mountain scrub plant communities. It is an erect shrub that grows to heights between 3 and 5 meters. Its dense, tangling branches and foliage are covered in gray woolly fibers. Its small leaves are oval to heart-shaped, toothed along the edges, and generally less than two centimeters long. The shrub produces flower clusters made up of individual flower heads each around 1.5 centimeters long. Each flower head is cylindrical to conical in shape, wrapped in layers of gray woolly phyllaries whose tips curl outward from the head. Each flower head holds around 23 dull white to reddish-tinted yellow disc florets that protrude from the tip of the head. The fruit produced is a hairy achene about 4 millimeters long, topped with a bristly pappus. This species is named after Rev. Joseph Cook Nevin.
