About Brickellia atractyloides A.Gray
Brickellia atractyloides A.Gray, commonly called spearleaf brickellbush, is a North American flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. It is native to desert areas of the southwestern United States (including Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah) and northwestern Mexico (including Sonora and Baja California). This species is a shrub that grows up to 50 cm (20 inches) tall. It produces many small flower heads that hold cream-colored or pale green disc florets, and has no ray florets. Two varieties are recognized for this species. Brickellia atractyloides var. atractyloides is found in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. Brickellia atractyloides var. odontolepis (B.L.Rob.) Jeps. is found in California, Baja California, and Sonora. The Flora of North America mentions a third variety, var. arguta, which is treated here as the distinct species Brickellia arguta, a classification accepted by The Plant List.
