About Brachypodium sylvaticum (Huds.) P.Beauv.
Brachypodium sylvaticum (Huds.) P.Beauv. is a tall, tufted perennial bunchgrass that grows to approximately 0.9 meters (3.0 feet) in height. Its drooping leaf blades are dark green or bright yellow-green, flat, and up to 12 mm wide, with a fringe of hairs along the leaf edges. This species lacks leaf auricles. Leaf blades connect to the hollow culm via the leaf sheath; the open hairy sheath surrounds the culm. The culm is covered in long, soft hairs (pilose) and typically bears 4 to 5 nodes. Its ligules are blunt and measure 1–6 millimeters (0.039–0.236 inches) long. The grass produces drooping, narrow, long spikelets of flowers held on very short pedicels. The entire flower head is 6–20 centimeters (2.4–7.9 inches) long, and the species flowers in July and August. Straight awns 6–18 millimeters (0.24–0.71 inches) long project out from the end of the spikelets.
