About Brachypodium pinnatum (L.) P.Beauv.
Brachypodium pinnatum (L.) P.Beauv., commonly known as heath false brome or tor-grass, is a grass species that is widespread across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It typically grows in calcareous grassland, and reaches a height of 70–120 centimetres (28–47 inches). Its open flowerhead holds 10 to 15 erect spikelets. This plant has been recorded in the U.S. states of California, Massachusetts, and Oregon. In ecology, caterpillars of some Lepidoptera species use Brachypodium pinnatum as a food plant; one example is the Essex skipper (Thymelicus lineola). It is also counted among the most important host grasses for Auchenorrhyncha in central Europe.
