About Brachymesia furcata (Hagen, 1861)
Like other dragonflies, Brachymesia furcata has a three-stage primary life cycle: egg, nymph, and adult. Females lay their eggs in still water, either on submerged aquatic plants or directly into the water, depending on environmental conditions. Potential habitats that this species can colonize include marshes, ponds, lakes, and other mildly saline aquatic environments. For newly hatched nymphs, bottom debris and aquatic vegetation provide both food and shelter. After going through several molts, the nymph develops into an adult. Adult B. furcata continue to live in a semi-aquatic environment, where they feed on small flying insects such as flies and mosquitoes. The full life cycle of this species has a fast generation time, but the exact length of the interval depends on local environmental conditions.
