About Brachydiplax chalybea Brauer, 1868

Description and habitat: The male of Brachydiplax chalybea is 33 to 35 millimeters long, with a hindwing length of 24 to 27 millimeters. The male is powder blue with light brown sides and a dark-tipped abdomen. Its wings are hyaline, with a tinted burnt-brown base that fades to amber. The female is brownish yellow, with darker markings along the dorsal side of the abdomen. The female's wings lack the yellow tinge seen in males. This species can be easily distinguished from other species in the genus Brachydiplax by its larger size, the characteristic color of its thorax, and the color of its wing bases. This species occurs in many types of wet habitat, including brackish and disturbed waters. Males are observed more frequently than females, because of their territorial behavior. Females lay eggs by "flicking" an egg mass out of the water onto nearby rocks and vegetation.
