Bouteloua trifida Thurb. ex S.Watson is a grass species that is commonly called red grama. It is native to central and northern Mexico, as well as the Southwestern United States, where it grows in desert scrub and other dry habitats. This is a small perennial grass that reaches a maximum height of around 30 centimeters. It occasionally develops a small rhizome. Its thin, thready leaves grow no longer than 5 centimeters. The inflorescence holds widely spaced spikelets that are colored reddish purple. Each spikelet has three awns at its tip. It typically flowers from March through September.
