About Bouteloua hirsuta Lag.
Bouteloua hirsuta Lag., commonly called hairy grama, is a warm-season grass that reaches a height of 10 to 20 inches (0.2 to 0.5 meters). It grows well on mountainous plateaus, rocky slopes, and sandy plains. Its leaf blades are flat or slightly rolled, narrow, mostly produced at the base of the plant, and have hairy margins. Its leaf sheaths are rounded, smooth, and shorter than the stem internodes. The seedhead holds one to four spikes that are purplish before reaching maturity, and each is approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) long. The rachis of the seedhead extends beyond the spikelets. This grass is primarily used for grazing. Hairy grama prefers rocky slopes and dry, sandy areas located at elevations between 4,000 and 6,500 feet (1,200 to 2,000 meters).
